Gears Of War

Gears of War was supposed to be THE game which defined Microsoft's dream of HD quality console gaming. We've been waiting for its arrival for far too long, but now it's finally here.

You play the part of Marcus Fenix - elite combat soldier fallen from grace and finding himself banged up in prison. Your right hand man Dom breaks you out to help defeat the subterranean invasion of the Locust which has virtually demolished the world of Sera.

Your squad of soldiers have enough personality to make them unique without annoying the living daylights out of you. Your teammates’ AI is very good, which is a relief because the AI of the Locost horde is just as clever. You’ll need to ’stop and pop’ as the developers call it - hide behind cover then pop your head out to take shots at the bad guys. Running and strafing won’t get you very far in this game, believe me.

Graphics, as you would expect following all the hype over the last 12 months, are amazing, but they are matched by the quality of the gameplay, not only in single-player mode but also the superb multi-player modes.

Two-man co-op can be played online or split-screen, and you’ll find yourselves playing through those same simngle-player levels with a mate platying the role of your right-hand man Dom. Four man co-op involves two teams of four players going head to head over eight maps.

There’s none of the standard Capture The Flag or Deathmatch options you’ll find in virtually every other game of this genre, but there is an interesting Execution mode in which the only method of killing the enemy is to take them out with a sniper shot to the head or smash them to pieces close up with the chainsaw.

So was it worth the wait for Gears Of War? A resounding ’yes’!
