Lego Star Wars - The Complete Saga

First things first, if you’ve played the previous Lego Star Wars games then you’ve already played through most of this game. It’s just an amalgamation of the two trilogies with a few extra bits. However if you’re new to the Lego Star Wars universe, you’re

Neither of these mighty franchises (Star Wars or Lego) needs any introduction but it’s a very effective formula in the context of a console game. In fact it’s bordering on genius. Add to that the fact that you have the freedom to play the game however you choose, either in film sequence or just your favourite bits, with any character you choose (even one you invent yourself if you prefer – its Lego don’t forget) and you have the potential for hours and hours of fun.

It’s a very childlike game but don’t let that put you grown-ups off, it merely adds to the charm. Running around using the Force, swinging lightsabers, blasting things and solving little puzzles has never been such innocent fun. Even nice little touches for Star Wars uber-fans will delight – such as the way Chewie pulls people’s arms out of their sockets or Han’s cocky raised eyebrow when he draws his blaster. Plus just doing things that aren’t right in the films; using Princess Leia in her gold bikini and Jar Jar Binks to take on the Emperor, or having General Grievous and Yoda fighting side by side can be strangely satisfying.

There’s more to it than just playing through the levels though. You can collect Lego studs to trade in for bonuses in the Cantina, vehicle parts, unlock other characters (is that Indiana Jones wondering about by the Cantina bar?), and if you have two controllers get a friend to join in co-op mode. Online play is available also.

It’s not without its gripes however. For example the camera angles can be a little awkward so sometimes you can’t see who’s shooting at you or you misjudge a jump. Also the additional characters who are supposed to be helping you can just be in the way or lamely watching you do all the work. These are pretty minor issues though and don’t detract from the fun.

Overall, a very enjoyable game for child or adult, and excellent value for money if you haven’t already got previous Lego Star Wars titles.
