Alone In The Dark

Some of the 'more mature' gamers out there may remember this PC title from way back in the early 90's. Well Atari have resurrected it and it is back on all formats.

The story is told in a TV-style narrative along the lines of 24, Heroes, Prison Break etc...

Every level is a chapter (8 in all), broken down into sections shown on the timeline. The game lets you jump in and out of the sections out of sequence, allowing casual gamers to skip over the bits that they find too difficult. This may be a bit of a cheat, but does allow those of us with less hardcore tendencies to get the most out of a pretty decent game.

There's a good mix of enemy AI in the game and the big bosses aren't easy to beat. You'll need a good selection of weapons. In addition to the default pistol you can pick up a variety of other items which will help you on your quest. Also vehicles in the game which can not only be driven, but also exploded. Every item in the game has a fire rating and acts differently accordingly. Once burned, locked wooden doors can become brittle enough to be opened.

Presentation is good, graphics are slick and levels are nicely laid out. The audio soundtrack and sound effects are atmospheric and dramatic and required.

There's a general lack of decent survival horror games on the market and Alone in the Dark fills that niche very well.
