The Incredibles: Rise of the Underminer
Pixar's animated superhero movie spawned a fairly average spin-off game last winter, but THQ have had another attempt to recreate the action hero fun with Rise of the Underminer and succeeded.
The game begins where the original movie left off, with the Underminer threatening to wreak havoc on the occupants of Metroville.
This time around players must guide Mr Incredible and Frozone through the game, switching from one to the other to take advantage of their unique strengths. Mr Incredible is a little stronger when button bashing, and can pick up and throw objects, while Frozone is able to freeze objects and enemies and build ice bridges across gaps in the level.
Two-player mode allows each player to take on one of the characters and work together, but play solo and you’ll soon be switching back and to frantically as you battle your way through the enemies, using Frozone to freeze objects being thrown at you so that Mr Incredible can throw them back at the bad guys. It is also possible to give instructions to your partner but the AI isn’t all that great and you’ll find it easier to switch when needed.
Graphics are nice and bright but audio is a bit of a letdown. Original voices are replaced by soundalikes and there’s little in the way of background music.
Apparently there’s no new Incredibles movie in the pipeline, but this game should satisfy fans of the original and kids alike.
