Nanostray

Scrolling 2D shoot-em-ups have always been fun, and one of the reasons that so many of us still cling to the retro consoles which made them so popular.

Nanostray instantly takes you back to that era, albeit with much-improved graphics.

The background scenery is beautiful and at times emerges into the foreground as you guide your ship through the levels. Unfortunately, you’ll often find this out by trial and error as you crash into objects particularly the first time you play each level.

Shoot up all the enemies and a power-up appears on the screen for you to collect. Strangely, pressing the R button will suck the power-up towards you, negating the need to dodge and weave your way to the corners of the screen.

The final flaw in this title is the need to use the touch screen to switch weapons during battle. The game is played at such a fast pace that having to fumble for the side cannons is a difficult task when attempting to survive a wave of enemy fighters.

As each level is completed in Adventure mode they unlock in Arcade and Challenge mode, giving the title a fair amount of longevity.

There’s certainly a few improvements that could have been made to this game, but overall it is an enjoyable experience and hardened gamers will soon learn to get around the minor gripes.
