Caesar 4

Get your Gladius out for the lads! Caesar 4 is coming so ready your mouse and prepare yourself for the latest in this respected city-building series

The Caesar series, that bastion of Build-‘Em-Up gaming, returns soon in a new incarnation, one that hopes to advance the city-building template that characterised the previous versions. Caesar III is heralded as a classic by fans of the genre and no doubt this new version will be equally well-received. Whether it will garner many new devotees is another matter as the gameplay does seem to adhere to traditional, tried-and-tested routines and methods.

Development on this new version has been overseen by Tilted Mill and sees the player taking the role of a provincial governor within the Empire (the Roman one, in case you hadn’t already guessed). As the game progresses, your City-‘Em-Up skills must evolve with your city as it grows, taking on the new challenges that rear up as the urban sprawl creeps across the landscape. Plebs must be kept happy, Equites must be managed and Prefects must be given special ties so the rest of the school can recognise them – either that or they get fancy villas and contribute big taxes to your initially puny coffers.

Barbarians can threaten your city, so garrisoning your metropolis with troops is essential to stop the hordes from looting your banks, carrying off your womenfolk and drawing crude images on your bathhouse walls. See off all the municipal, financial and militaristic challenges and you can rise through the Senatorial ranks and eventually become Caesar, where you can marry your horse and have people randomly executed for watching Big Brother.

So, if you fancy building a Roman City and facing the challenges that that brings with it, you might want to check out Caesar 4.
