First-person shooters are the most popular eSport to watch

esports4The market research arm of business multinational PwC has dedicated the latest report in its Consumer Intelligence series to eSports, and results from its ~700 person survey on the topic suggest that despite the remarkable popularity of MOBAs, first-person shooters are still the most popular eSport to watch.

When asked which genres of games they usually watch, 63 percent of survey respondents who identified as eSports viewers said first-person shooters, 37 percent said MOBAs and 36 percent said fighting games.

That seems to contradict some popular assumptions that MOBAs are the dominant eSport to watch right now, assumptions predicated on reports like this one from EEDAR last year that claims, based on a survey of over 2,000 people, that League of Legends is the most popular game among eSports fans.

An equally interesting statistic in the PwC report is that 22 percent of women surveyed said they are “involved with eSports,” compared to just 18 percent of men surveyed.
