Black Ops crowned Christmas Number 1

3m UK sales and counting for latest Call of Duty; FIFA 11 and Need for Speed claim second and third.

As was predicted by pretty much everybody last week, Activision’s Call of Duty: Black Ops has been named as the UK’s official Christmas Number One video game.

The game has now sold over 3m copies in the UK, making it one of only three games to top the £100m mark (the others being Modern Warfare 2 and Wii Fit). The Top Ten combined have sold over 10m units and generated £345m in revenue in their time on the market.

EA’s pair of FIFA 11 and Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit fail in their bid to usurp Activision’s champion shooter, claiming second and third respectively – and that’s despite some very aggressive discounting on the former title at some retailers.

Ubisoft claims the remaining Top Five spaces, with Just Dance 2 claiming fourth and Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood finishing fifth.

Nintendo is the big winner in the latter half of the Top Ten, with three titles featuring – Donkey Kong Country Returns (seventh), Wii Fit Plus (ninth) and Professor Layton and the Lost Future (tenth).

“With over 11m video games sold in the last four weeks in the UK, generating over £290m, they are clearly the gift of choice this Christmas, showing once again that the interactive entertainment industry is the UK’s leading creative industry,” UKIE director general Michael Rawlinson stated.

“The Christmas chart also demonstrates the variety of choice on offer for consumers; there really is something for everyone.”

Other notable Top 40 finishes include Ubisoft’s Michael Jackson: The Experience in 12th, Microsoft’s Kinect Sports at number 15, Nintendo’s Wii Sports Resort in 26th and Koch’s The X Factor at number 30.
