Skyrim’s DLC Will “Feel Closer to an Expansion Pack” Than Fallout’s

If you’ve been playing Skyrim incessantly every day since launch, you might have cause to worry about running out of stuff to do within your lifetime. After all, if you’ve slain 105,658 unlimited dragons, you’ve slain… 105,658 unlimited dragons. Perhaps, you figure — glaring wearily at your flawless armor that makes you look like a cross between Sauron and whatever haunt’s Sauron’s nightmares — it’s time for a change of scenery. Bethesda, however, asks that you hold your horses — unruly creatures though they might be.

Speaking with Kotaku, Bethesda’s Todd Howard broke down his new philosophy in regard to DLC.

“For Fallout 3 we did five DLCs. That was a very aggressive path for us. Our plan now is to take more time, to have more meat on them [for Skyrim]. They’ll feel closer to an expansion pack.”
“Because that gap [between releases] is going to be bigger, we want to put litle things out for free in between. We’ve already done that for PC with the high-res pack. We’re trying to figure out what those things are.”

How about ride-able dragons, dragon-sized mudcrabs, or ride-able dragon crabs? Howard was, of course, enthusiastic about the results of Bethesda’s internal Skyrimjam, but cautioned that those odds and ends are still — like the majestic Mudcrabzilla — capable of breaking everything.

“It looks like a ton of stuff that could ship right now, but it’s in a sizzle video. It’s, you know, it’s not bug-tested, polished, balanced.”
“That wasn’t all of it. It’s probably 60% of it. The other 40% doesn’t show as well in a video or we didn’t have good footage.”
