GTA 5 on PS4 and Xbox One – What’s new?

Rockstar has confirmed that GTA 5 will release on PS4 and Xbox One on 18 November, with a PC version due on 27 January 2015. So, now you know how long you have to save your pennies for the ultimate versions of this rather special game. However, what you may not know is that a number of changes are being made to the game–and the GTA package as a whole–that could significantly influence the way you play.

Sure, we all know that the game will look prettier, with higher-resolution textures and an increased draw distance, but these are the technological cherries on top of a rather glorious new-gen ice cream. So, with the tired food metaphor done and dusted, let’s look at what the big improvements are, and how they’ll change the game…

There is a stack of fresh stuff in the game, including extra activities, more weapons, and a range of new vehicles. What are they? Classic vehicles from the series will be available to ‘jack-and-drive’ including the Dukes, the Dodo (seaplane), and a more agile version of the Blimp. Two-person jetskis? That’s happening. Will there be a jetpack? Fans have been demanding it, and it’s the sort of thing Rockstar would want to keep secret until launch, so the answer is… maybe.

New activities include wildlife photography, and extra shooting-range challenges. Not too thrilling on paper, but this is likely to be the start of a more exciting list of new ‘things to do’. Interestingly, the trailer shows a body-builder flexing his muscles. Will our protagonists be able to bulk up? And weapons? No word on what these are. Fingers crossed for a flame thrower, and maybe some kind of samurai sword. Ooh, and hopefully a chainsaw for, y’know, cutting down trees.
